Stop Worrying About Hurricanes, But Don't Be Lulled Into Complacency
BULLETIN 23 JUL 2010: Over 4000 South Florida homes without power from Tropical Storm Bonnie with winds of only 40 MPH!
Hurricanes are a fact of life if you live in Florida. There's no reason to be afraid... Just prepared.
Installing a standby power system is one of the BEST things you can do if you live on the east or west coast.
The forecasts are saying we're going to have more hurricanes... far more than any of us can remember. This is because they come in decades long cycles. We phased into a more active period between 1995 and 2000 and the January 1, 2010 Tropical Storm Forecast from the University of Colorado is not good. It predicts that the US East Coast, including Florida, is facing a higher than normal probability of being hit by a land falling hurricane or tropical storm. The 2007 season created
TWO unprecedented back to back category 5 hurricanes that followed the same track.Thank heavens they went another direction, but they just as easily could have come our way.
Factoid:
It only takes 35 mph of wind to knock out power and the long term forecasts call for land falling storms that will affect us. Be ready. For the latest tropical updates, we recommend Crownweather.com
There is no reason to fear hurricanes, but there is every reason to respect them. We respect these storms by preparing, following the instructions of emergency managers, having proper barrier protection (awnings), and installing standby electrical power.
What Happens During a Prolonged Power Outage After a Hurricane or Tropical Storm
Food spoils in your home and tens of thousands of dollars in perishable inventory is lost in businesses
Cooking becomes impossible and the air conditioning is out in the hottest worst time of the year
Medical devices fail placing dependent family members at risk
Security systems, electric garage doors, telephones, computers and televisions are useless
Drinking water gets scarce and bathing becomes a luxury when electric well pumps don't work and municipal water sources are unsafe
Essential institutions are shut down when their customers need them the most, IE banks and automatic teller machines
Medical and dental patients could not be treated except under emergency conditions in facilities that were already overwhelmed
Homes requiring electric lift pumps experienced public sewage backflowing into their houses
That's a lot of bad news, but the good news is that we now have the technology to defeat 100% of the horrendous experiences that are caused by prolonged power outages.
The automatic standby generator is the solution. About the size of an air conditioner, it sits outside your home and is hardwired to your main electrical panel. When it senses a loss of power from the power company, it automatically starts up and in 25 seconds it supplies electricity to your home or business. Your life goes on without disruption. These systems are fully automatic, have their own fuel supply, and require no action from you. It's that simple.
